The Most Powerful Actions
When it comes to work what do you find is the easiest part of your job? Is it doing the things you are good at because you have done them many times before and they come very naturally to you. If so they have become easy because these tasks have become new habits. The Cambridge Dictionary defines habit as, "something that you do often and regularly, sometimes without knowing that you are doing it.""Habit is the intersection of knowledge (what to do), skill (how to do), and desire (want to do)" - Stephen R. Covey. So you see habits can be very powerful or they can be a strong negative influence if they are a bad habit. Either way they have a large effect on our lives.
Potent Foundational Habits
Many of the functions in our lives are repeated in the form of a habit. That is why our habits are the foundations that the rest of our lives are built upon. That means they have a knock-on effect which is important. So if our base or foundational habits are flawed or weak then the flow on from that will be difficulty with other parts of our lives. Let me give you an example. Communication is important, right! Communication is based on listening as it's a foundational skill. If you listen just so you can give a quick reply that shows how smart you are, then that develops into a weakness in your communication. If you listen actively so that you are not thinking about what ideas you have but really focus on the message of the other person then you will reply with an answer that is not about you but is telling the other person that you actually understand what they are saying. You will then stand out as a very good communicator. See what I mean by the need for strong foundational skills. They form the key to all the other components of our lives built on top of them.Ace Of Habits
The ACE of habits is an incredibly strong faith in your own ability. Whenever I try to achieve anything that is stretching my abilities vastly, I find it quite difficult. Often when I feel that I am finally making headway I hit the wall and am stopped in my tracks. I have learnt that the best things are rarely handed to me on a platter. This is where faith not in what I am doing, but faith in my abilities comes in. You see my end goal may change slightly with a pivot in what I am doing but the overall result is the same. Faith is belief when all the odds and evidence seem to be against me. Strangely enough I realise now that when I hit the wall that it is a test of my faith and of whether I really want what I am going after enough. When I am able to keep my faith that I will achieve what I set out to do no matter what happens along the way I am always successful. Many times I have found that it was not long after I have hit the wall that I am able to find an alternative route which takes me to my goal sooner than I first thought. It is incredibly important for me to maintain faith in my ability to win out over challenges because friends and associates will often lose faith in me and stop encouraging me. Set backs are just another way that does not work. Treat them as feedback. Many scholars have said that we fail our way to success. This is very true and a vital reason why we need to keep faith in what we are doing. It is sensible to spend much more time in the planning phase and working out clearly what you really want to achieve.
